The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF) Technical Assistance (TA) Center convened the “Advancing Suicide Prevention Best Practices in Peer Support for SMVF” (SPPEER) Virtual Implementation Academy on March 22-23, 2017.  Based on veteran population data, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New York City, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia were selected to participate in this 2-day event, featuring both onsite and virtual technical components.  The SPPEER Virtual Implementation Academy brought together military and civilian peer leaders with key suicide prevention leaders in each state to create an implementation plan designed to support the adoption of SMVF suicide prevention and trauma-informed best practices.  The SPPEER Virtual Implementation Academy not only encouraged peer leaders to implement SMVF suicide prevention best practices in their efforts, but also encouraged states and communities to incorporate peers into their comprehensive approach to SMVF suicide prevention.
